Warning signs: how to tell that an online casino is not trustworthy

The tests · before and after you deposit

The five tests sort casinos that look serious. These signs do the opposite: they discard the ones that are not, in minutes. They come in three groups: what you see before signing up, what happens at the cashier, and what happens when you ask for your money.

Our register of trusted online casinos in Chile starts from casinos that hold a licence in force. But not every casino you meet in an advert, a group chat or a message clears even that bar. These signs work for any of them, on our list or not.

Before you sign up

The licence does not appear in the register. The footer says «licensed in Curaçao», but searching the domain at cert.cga.cw returns nothing, or the certificate shows a different status. How to search, step by step, in how to check a licence.

The licence seal is only an image. A real seal leads to the certificate on the official portal. One that leads nowhere, or to a page on the casino's own site, proves nothing.

The Curaçao Gaming Authority certificate search at cert.cga.cw
The search box at cert.cga.cw asks for the domain or the company, not for the licence number. Type the domain exactly as it stands in the address bar, without https and without www.

The certificate names a different domain and a different company. Another domain belonging to the same company may have an explanation. Another domain belonging to another company does not.

Curaçao Gaming Authority certificate for cloudbet.com showing the status Active
A certificate in order carries five facts: the domain, the holding company (here Halcyon Super Holdings B.V.), the company number, the licence number OGL/2024/328/0599 and the status Active.

The terms do not exist, or are filler. Serious terms have numbered clauses, name the holding company and say what happens with withdrawals. A generic page with no numbers, or one copied from another casino under another name, is a strong sign.

You arrived through a link you did not ask for. A message, an advert on social media, a «mirror» of the casino someone sent you. Type the domain yourself or use a bookmark, and check it is the one on the certificate.

Promises of winnings. «Guaranteed wins», «foolproof system», «win back what you lost». No trustworthy casino promises winnings, because the house edge is there in every game.

At the cashier

Pressure to deposit. Countdowns, «today only», an agent writing to you to deposit more. A casino that needs to rush you does not want you reading the terms.

Odd payment methods. You are asked to transfer to a personal account, to a wallet that is not shown in the cashier, or by some route other than the one on the site. The deposit address has to come out of the casino's cashier, inside your account.

The bonus switches itself on. If the bonus applies on deposit without your accepting it and you cannot remove it, your withdrawal is tied to a rollover you did not choose.

When you ask for your money

«Pending» with no deadline. The withdrawal sits pending for days and support cites no clause. Serious terms say how long the review takes or what triggers it.

You are asked to deposit to release the withdrawal. A «fee», a «tax», a «verification deposit». It is the clearest sign of all. Do not deposit.

Surprise verification. Documents the verification clause never mentions, or a check that repeats with new requirements every time.

The conditions change. Support cites a rule that is not in the terms, or a version of the terms different from the one you read when you signed up. This is why it is worth saving a copy of the terms on the day you open the account.

What to do if you already deposited

  1. Deposit nothing more. Not to release anything, not to «level up», not to pay fees.
  2. Gather evidence. Deposit and withdrawal transaction IDs, screenshots of the balance and the history, screenshots of the chat with support, and whatever version of the terms you saved.
  3. Ask for the clause in writing. By email, not only in chat: «which clause of the terms justifies the delay to my withdrawal?».
  4. Complain to the authority. If the casino holds a licence in force, look on the issuing authority's site for its player complaints channel. That is why knowing which authority it is matters.
  5. Look after your head. Losing money to a casino that will not pay is a blow. If you find yourself playing to win it back, read safer play.

Licences that expire count too

Not every sign is bad faith. An Anjouan licence expiring in ten days does not make a casino a scam, but it is a reason to check the register on the day you intend to deposit. There are three such cases in our register; the fourth, in green, expires in February 2027:

One rule that covers them all

If a condition affecting your money is not written in the terms, it does not exist for you. And if it turns up anyway when you ask for the withdrawal, you already know what kind of casino this is. The tests that turn that rule into a method are in how to tell if a casino is trustworthy.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know whether an online casino is a scam?
The clearest signs: the licence does not appear in the official register or names a different domain, the terms do not exist or have no numbered clauses, and support asks you to deposit more to release a withdrawal. One of them is enough not to deposit.
What do I do if a casino will not pay me?
Gather evidence (transaction IDs, screenshots of the balance and of the chat, the clause they cite), ask in writing for the exact clause that justifies the delay, and deposit nothing more. If the casino holds a licence in force, you can complain to the authority that issued it.
Is it a bad sign when a casino asks for documents?
No, as long as the verification clause says so and the requirements match what is written. It is a bad sign when verification appears out of nowhere, with requirements that are not in the terms, or when it repeats again and again without ever being resolved.
