Safer play at online casinos: budget, limits and where to ask for help in Chile
Playing with your head
A trustworthy casino pays you what you win. It does not stop you losing more than you meant to. That depends on a couple of habits worth having from day one, and on knowing where to ask for help if playing stops being a pastime.
Our register of trusted online casinos in Chile measures whether a casino writes its rules about money down. None of those rules changes the arithmetic of gambling: the house wins in the long run, at a trustworthy casino just as at one that is not. What stays in your hands is how much and how long you play.
Before you deposit
- A monthly budget. Decide what you will spend in the month, as you would with nights out or subscriptions. Money you do not need for bills, rent or savings.
- A wallet or account just for playing. If you play with crypto, use a separate wallet and move only the session's worth into it. Keep your savings somewhere else.
- No credit. Do not buy crypto on a credit card to play, and do not borrow to play.
- Limits on the account. Almost every casino lets you set deposit limits and breaks. Set them on day one. Raising them usually takes time; lowering them does not.
During the session
- A time limit. Set an alarm on your phone. There are no clocks on a casino screen.
- No top-ups. What you bring to the session is what you play. When it is gone, the session is over.
- Do not chase losses. A bad session is not fixed by a bigger one. That idea costs more money than any other.
- Withdraw your winnings. Take what you win out to your wallet. A casino balance is not savings.
Signs that playing has stopped being entertainment
- You play to win back what you lost.
- You raise the budget «just this once», again and again.
- You hide how much you play from family or friends.
- You use money meant for bills, rent or savings.
- You play at night when you should be asleep, or at work.
- Not being able to play makes you irritable.
One of these is reason enough to stop for a while. Several are reason to talk to someone.
VIP programmes and volume bonuses are designed to make you play more. If you notice you are playing in order to climb a tier, that is one of the signs.
Where to ask for help in Chile
- Jugadores Anónimos Chile. Peer support groups for people with a gambling problem. They hold in-person meetings in Providencia and meetings over Zoom, and list a contact number on their site, jugadoresanonimoschile.cl. There is also a second group with daily Zoom meetings at jugadoresanonimos.cl.
- Salud Responde (Ministry of Health): 600 360 77 77. Health guidance by telephone. It can point you to where in the health service to get help.
- **The \*4141 line.** If you are in crisis or thinking of harming yourself, call \*4141 from a mobile: it is free, answers 24 hours a day, and a psychologist picks up.
If you are playing at a casino that will not pay you
The stress of a held-up withdrawal leads to bad decisions: depositing more to «release» it, playing to win it back. Before doing anything, read the warning signs and gather evidence. And to avoid getting there at all, always make a small test withdrawal before depositing seriously: it is explained in withdrawals and the test withdrawal.
